Itron and AT&T are expanding their collaboration to connect cellular gas and water meters to AT&T’s nationwide LTE-M network, allowing utilities to collect meter data remotely without deploying additional communications infrastructure.
The agreement covers Itron’s 500G Cellular Gas Module and 500W Cellular Water Module, extending the connectivity options available to utilities operating across geographically dispersed service territories.
The gas module enables remote collection of consumption, event and alarm data, supporting billing and monitoring of gas distribution systems. The water module provides access to meter readings and system performance data, which utilities can use to identify potential leaks and monitor water consumption.
Both solutions are designed to reduce the need for manual meter readings and site visits, potentially lowering operational costs and improving access to data from remote locations.
The expanded collaboration builds on Itron’s earlier integration of the two modules with its UtilityIQ head-end software, which enables utilities to manage cellular and mesh network deployments through a single platform.
By adding AT&T’s network as a connectivity option, the companies said utilities would have greater flexibility to select communications technologies according to their operational and geographical requirements.
“Utilities depend on reliable connectivity to access the data that supports their day-to-day operations,” said David Garver, Vice-President of Business Development for IoT at AT&T.
John Marcolini, Senior Vice-President of Networked Solutions at Itron, said the expanded collaboration would give utilities greater choice in how they connect field assets while improving visibility across gas and water systems.
