Itron has launched a Cloud-based meter data management platform that uses artificial intelligence to help utilities process data from smart meters and other grid-edge devices closer to real time.
The company said IEE Cloud AI, the latest version of its Itron Enterprise Edition meter data management system, is designed to help utilities use existing advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) investments for applications including outage detection, grid visibility, anomaly detection, forecasting and revenue assurance.
The launch comes as electricity networks face growing volumes of data from increasingly digitalised grids. The US Energy Information Administration expects US electricity generation to reach a record 4,368bn kWh in 2026.
IEE Cloud AI integrates with Itron’s Intelligent Edge Operating System (IEOS), which provides a common data layer for meter, grid-edge, analytics and application data. Itron said this is intended to reduce the need for separate software integrations and data silos.
The platform can process data as it arrives rather than relying on traditional overnight processing. Utilities can validate meter readings, deal with exceptions and run operations on demand, while the Cloud architecture supports dynamic scaling.
Itron is also adding natural-language and agent-assisted workflows, allowing users to retrieve information and automate some operational tasks. The company said these workflows operate with human oversight.
“Utilities are facing rapid data growth, rising regulatory expectations and increasing operational complexity, yet the need for trusted meter data remains non-negotiable,” said Don Reeves, Senior Vice-President, Outcomes at Itron.
