u-blox has unveiled the JODY-W6, a concurrent dual-band Wi-Fi 6E module with Bluetooth 5.3, featuring LE Audio, in a notably compact size of 13.8 x 19.8 x 2.5 mm. This new module is designed for a variety of automotive applications, including infotainment and navigation systems, advanced telematics, and OEM telematics solutions.
A report by Techno Systems Research on the Wireless Connectivity Market indicates that Wi-Fi 6 and 6E technologies are showing significant growth within the automotive sector. Wi-Fi 6 enhances efficiency through reduced data congestion, improved network capacity, and lower power consumption. Wi-Fi 6E, on the other hand, improves spectrum usage, allowing for more simultaneous users, less congestion, and heightened security.
The u-blox JODY-W6 not only harnesses the advantages of Wi-Fi 6E but also incorporates dual-mode Bluetooth with LE Audio. The module is globally certified and operates efficiently within a temperature range of -40 °C to 105 °C.
Available with two or three antenna options, the JODY-W6 module can also be configured to include an LTE filter upon request. An Evaluation Kit (EVK) and an M.2 card are set to be available for the JODY-W6 series. Additionally, its compatibility with earlier JODY modules ensures easy scalability.
Sebastian Schreiber, Senior Product Line Manager at u-blox’s Short Range Product Center, commented, “The JODY-W6 module offers a smart and reliable solution, adept at managing congestion and meeting scalability needs due to its highly adaptable size. Its applications span various functionalities, including support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, personalized entertainment, data offloading, and integration with smart/roof antennas.”
The module is powered by an embedded NXP Semiconductors AW693 chipset.
Larry Olivas, Vice President and General Manager of Wireless Connectivity Solutions at NXP Semiconductors, remarked, “The AW693 SoC within the JODY-W6 SoM capitalises on the latest Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth LE audio technologies. This integration opens new avenues in the automotive space, with the AW693 chipset featuring advanced technologies like MU-MIMO, OFDMA, and target wake time (TWT). This collaboration with u-blox, our gold partner, allows the JODY-W6 module to leverage these sophisticated features effectively.”
Samples of the u-blox JODY-W6 are currently available, with mass production scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2025.
