Insight SiP, a specialist in ultra-compact RF modules, has introduced the ISP2454-MX, a Bluetooth-enabled module housed in a remarkably small 8 x 8 x 1mm package, the smallest available in the market.
With an extended temperature range of up to 105°C, this module is well-suited for next-generation Bluetooth solutions, including Angle of Arrival (AoA) and Bluetooth Channel Sounding technology. Built on the new Nordic nRF54L15 platform, it delivers enhanced performance with a 4th-generation radio and a microprocessor running at double the speed of previous nRF52 series devices, all at a reduced cost.
The ISP2454-MX supports a wide range of applications, featuring a powerful 128MHz Arm M33F processor and advanced security through ARM TrustZone. Power efficiency has been optimised in both active and sleep modes. The module offers expanded memory capacity, with 1.5MB of storage and 256KB RAM, enabling more complex and larger applications. Despite its enhanced performance, it remains cost-effective, making it ideal for price-sensitive projects.
Though equipped with advanced capabilities, the module retains Insight SiP’s standard 8 x 8 x 1mm form factor and is fully integrated with RF matching and an in-built antenna. The module also includes both 32MHz and 32kHz crystals and offers DC-DC support, allowing it to function as a complete Bluetooth node, requiring only a power supply for operation.
A full array of peripheral connections is available, including HS-SPI, SPI, UART, and I2S, among others. Additionally, the module features a programmable 128MHz RISC processor for high-speed peripherals. Besides supporting Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), the ISP2454-MX can run Zigbee, Thread, and other 802.15.4-based protocols concurrently with BLE. Applications and protocol stacks operate on the Zephyr real-time operating system, which provides extensive drivers and services.
“The new ISP2454 represents the next generation Bluetooth technology, offering more features and capability at lower cost. A miniature footprint and full integration make this RF module ‘ready to go’ for customers. It also offers footprint and pin compatibility with nRF52 based modules from Insight SiP, offering an easy upgrade path for customers,” said Nick Wood, Sales and Marketing Director at Insight SiP.
Designed to operate on a coin cell battery if needed, the ISP2454-MX offers ultra-low power consumption, with a power management system that can extend battery life for several years.
Initial samples are now available, with full production scheduled for 2025, pending certification. To assist product developers, Insight SiP will provide complete development kits, including sample software, enabling immediate development upon receipt.
