FLIR, part of Teledyne Technologies, has introduced the TrafiBot Dual AI multispectral camera system, specifically designed for enhancing traffic safety on interurban roads, particularly in tunnels and on bridges, where drivers face heightened risks from unseen obstacles or fast-developing vehicle fires.
The TrafiBot Dual AI features a fast thermal core and delivers highly reliable 14-bit early fire detection for road tunnels. Combined with advanced artificial intelligence (AI), it offers top-tier detection performance and accurate traffic data collection along interurban roadways, all without compromising image resolution or experiencing data loss due to bandwidth constraints.
This system employs three proprietary FLIR AI models simultaneously, developed using millions of images collected globally. One model detects and classifies fallen objects, while the other two identify vehicles using both thermal and visual data streams, including unusual objects like e-scooters and vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.
The TrafiBot Dual AI also incorporates FLIR’s patented 3D world tracker, enabling it to better detect incidents within its view. It can track vehicle speed and trajectory, even when objects become obscured by other vehicles or infrastructure. Additionally, it identifies sudden lane changes and wrong-way drivers, providing essential information to traffic managers for effective safety incident management and reducing false alarms.
TrafiBot Dual AI sets a new benchmark for early fire detection in traffic tunnels. By analysing 14-bit thermal data directly at the camera, the system processes 64 times more information than previous models, delivering faster and more reliable fire detection while minimising false alarms.
“Intelligent traffic management systems have made great strides during the past decade, and today traffic management teams require more immediate, accurate traffic data to alert first responders, save lives, and get vehicles moving again,” said Stefaan Pinck, Vice President, Business Development, FLIR. “TrafiBot Dual AI provides that capability through a combination of proprietary AI models 3D world tracker and its early fire detection capabilities.”
“FLIR has gone in the right direction by integrating its own traffic intelligence experience dating back more than 30 years within its AI algorithm, an experience that is unmatched by anyone else in the industry,” added Gil Marques, President of Tacel, one of Canada’s suppliers of advanced traffic management systems and traffic control devices. “Competitors must rely on off-the-shelf datasets and brand-new datasets to build their respective AI algorithms, which is not as powerful as the approach FLIR is using.”
Flexible design
TrafiBot Dual AI’s three-axis rotational design offers increased flexibility for installation, making it suitable for challenging infrastructure, such as sloped tunnel walls and confined spaces. The camera can swivel, pan, tilt, and roll, eliminating the need for custom adapter plates and reducing installation time. Its built-in tilt sensor automatically calibrates the camera, further minimising traffic disruption during installation.
Housed in an IP66/67-rated marine-grade stainless steel casing, the camera is designed to endure harsh weather conditions, including salt air, humidity, and high-pressure water blasts from road and tunnel cleaning. It boasts a 4K camera with optical zoom ranging from 6 to 22 mm and a detection range of up to 300 metres, offering superior coverage compared to earlier FLIR traffic cameras.
The TrafiBot Dual AI is designed to integrate seamlessly with FLIR Cascade, newly launched software that gathers and organises data from the camera. It features an intelligent incident filtering system, ensuring only relevant incidents are flagged for traffic operators. In the event of an incident, the system captures a 4K-resolution colour or thermal video clip for immediate review by traffic management teams. The camera can also integrate with video management systems for live footage streaming.
This solution is set to improve traffic safety, offering greater efficiency, reliability, and ease of use in managing critical incidents on interurban roads.
