Farnell has begun distribution of Toshiba’s new high-power Single-Pole Double-Throw (SPDT) RF antenna switch, an essential component in the progression of 5G networks.
The SPDT RF switch (model TCWA1225G) plays a crucial role in 5G expansion due to the increasing complexity of signal transmission paths within antennae, necessitating RF switches that offer low insertion loss, high input power, and compact dimensions.
This switch addresses these demands by providing a peak input power of 46 dBm (at 8dB PAR) within a remarkably small footprint. As a result, antenna sizes can either remain unchanged or be reduced, while maintaining consistent power output.
Toshiba developed the SPDT RF switch in response to the growing adoption of massive Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MIMO) technology in telecommunications base stations. These base stations require numerous transmit and receive antennae to support the ultra-high speed and large capacity radio communications services vital to 5G.
The design of individual antennae is increasingly characterised by super-multi-element configurations and intricate signal transmission paths. Conventional RF switches, often used for managing these complex paths, must combine low insertion loss with high input power, all within a compact form to prevent an increase in both the number of switches and antenna size due to space constraints. Toshiba’s SPDT RF switch effectively overcomes these challenges.
“This switch is a major accelerator for 5G and it’s essential that it’s widely and readily available to fulfil the promise of 5G networks. We are delighted to work with Toshiba to ensure this space and cost-saving device delivers its full potential in ensuring 5G implementation,” said Jose Lok Product Category Director for Semiconductors, Farnell.
The Toshiba SPDT RF switch is now available for shipment from Farnell in EMEA, Newark in North America, and element14 in the Asia-Pacific region.
