Viavi Solutions announced that it will present research, solutions, and perspectives on next-generation networking technologies, including 6G, AI, Open RAN (O-RAN), and Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs), at the IEEE International Communications Conference taking place in Denver, Colorado. The company will also showcase the Viavi Automated Lab-as-a-Service for Open RAN (VALOR).
6G Technology
- Full AI Neural Network Transmission: Viavi will demonstrate its proprietary complete neural network receiver in a downlink scenario, using a 5G-NR compliant OFDM signal (PDSCH) on a custom-built testbed
- MIMO Delay-Doppler Domain Waveform: Viavi will showcase Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS), a modulation technique designed to address wireless channels’ delay and Doppler shift challenges, using its proprietary simplified precoder solution and comparing it with OFDM
- Rate-Splitting Multiple Access in Overloaded Networks: Viavi will present its proprietary technique in the Rate Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) scheme, which reduces multi-user interference in overloaded networks where there are fewer transmitter antennas than users
High-fidelity Digital Twin
Viavi is working with the Institute for Wireless Internet of Things and the Open6G cooperative research centre at Northeastern University on large-scale RF propagation channel modelling using AI and ML technologies to develop a city-scale digital twin of a 6G network. Demonstrations will include:
- Using AI/ML to enhance ray tracing for RF propagation modelling
- Conducting real-world measurement campaigns on Northeastern’s Boston campus with the Viavi Ranger rugged RF capture and playback instrument
- Incorporating higher-layer KPIs into the digital twin to better model the effects of network conditions on application performance
Open RAN and NTN
- VALOR: Funded by a $21.7 million grant from the US NTIA Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund (PWSCIF), VALOR provides fully automated, open, and impartial testing and integration for Open RAN. It offers a certification pathway in the US for new entrants, startups, and academic institutions, with free access for academic institutions and NTIA co-grantees, subject to availability
- NTN: Viavi and Rohde & Schwarz will jointly demonstrate an end-to-end NTN-NR testbed in the lab, evaluating user app performance over NTN links
- RIC Test: An energy-saving rApp integrated with a Non-RT RIC will be showcased using the Viavi TeraVM RIC Test. This rApp employs ML-based intelligent procedures to optimise cell control, achieving significant energy savings without compromising service quality in realistic scenarios
- O-RAN Security Test: Security for O-DU/O-CU will be validated using the Viavi O-RAN Security Suite
Dr Sameh Yamany, Chief Technology Officer at Viavi, will deliver a keynote address on “Telecom Digital Twins and Their Role in Future Technologies Maturity” on Wednesday, 12 June, from 9:00 to 11:00 am.
Dr Paul Harris, Principal Wireless Architect at Viavi, will participate in a panel discussion on “Bridging the Gap: Channel Sounding and Modelling for Joint Communications and Sensing” on Wednesday, 12 June, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm.
