Kinéis and Semtech are enhancing satellite connectivity for the Internet of Things (IoT) by integrating standard terrestrial solutions, making global coverage accessible to millions of users.
The strategic collaboration between Kinéis and Semtech allows for the seamless integration of Kinéis’s satellite connectivity into Semtech’s chipsets, enabling the combination of satellite and terrestrial IoT on a single chip.
Kinéis, a French satellite operator, provides global IoT connectivity, transmitting data to users in near-real time with low data rates and minimal energy consumption. Semtech, a global supplier of high-performance semiconductors, LoRa and cellular IoT systems, and cloud services, supports this collaboration.
As a result of this partnership, users of Semtech LoRa Edge chips (including LR1110 and LR1120 chips) can access global IoT connectivity by incorporating Kinéis satellite connectivity alongside LoRaWAN terrestrial connectivity, without needing additional electronic modules. This collaboration simplifies the implementation of hybrid terrestrial-satellite devices, supporting multiple standard connectivity protocols.
Uers of Semtech LR1110 chips will be able to:
- Receive data via terrestrial LoRaWAN connectivity when available
- Receive data via Kinéis satellite IoT connectivity from any location
- Obtain location data complementary to GNSS information
Kinéis provides partners with a reference design and an instruction manual to enable them to integrate space connectivity into terrestrial IoT systems.
“This strategic collaboration answers the demand on the market to combine the best terrestrial and satellite networks available to offer our customers a continuous and complete global service, operating simply and transparently,” said Alexandre Tisserant, President Kinéis. “The ability to use Kinéis’s technology on electronic components already available and well widespread on the market, such as those from Semtech, illustrates the interest in the rapid spread of uses linked to satellite IoT.”
Four years after raising 100 million euros in capital, Toulouse-based company Kinéis is set to deploy Europe’s first dedicated IoT constellation of 25 nanosatellites in the summer of 2024.
Among the users of this IoT solution is Beepings, a pilot partner that has been developing autonomous and durable solutions since 2017. Beepings utilises innovative technologies for indoor/outdoor geolocation and data transmission from various external sensors.
“The Kinéis-Semtech partnership simplifies the access to satellite IoT and also reduces the cost of solutions, thanks to the LR1110 chip. Beepings is already in the pre-industrialization phase of its first solutions based on Kinéis space connectivity and is in a position to envision new, highly promising fields of application,” Pierre Fourmestraux, Chairman of Beepings.
