TPG Telecom has secured one of Australia’s largest smart metering project, winning a 10-year contract to manage one million NB-IoT smart meters for South East Water in Victoria. This initiative will see the replacement of traditional mechanical water meters with advanced NB-IoT digital meters, delivering significant water and cost savings for the 1.7 million customers within South East Water’s service area, spanning from Port Melbourne to Portsea and extending towards Gippsland.
The new digital meters will be installed across South East Water’s extensive 27,000-kilometre pipe network, revolutionising water management in the region. The project is expected to save approximately five billion litres of water annually through improved network operations and enhanced leak detection for customers.
These digital meters will allow customers to monitor and manage their water usage with daily updates, enabling them to detect spikes in consumption and gain a deeper understanding of both household and commercial water usage patterns. The connected meters will also assist South East Water and its customers in identifying leaking taps, faulty appliances, and inefficient irrigation systems, while also highlighting opportunities for behavioural changes to reduce water consumption and lower water bills.
“We are excited about our partnership with TPG Telecom and the cost savings
and sustainable benefits digital meters will bring to customers, community and
the environment,” said Mark Elvins, Acting General Manager Digital Utility at South East Water.
TPG Telecom has developed a comprehensive IoT solution, incorporating NB-IoT connectivity, SIM and device management, which enables the large-scale deployment of smart meters. This solution allows South East Water to securely and efficiently connect the NB-IoT smart meters, reduce costs and mitigate security risks, while providing the critical monitoring and enhanced coverage necessary for its extensive network of meters and pipes.
“TPG Telecom is proud to be at the forefront of NB-IoT deployments with this
significant advancement in water resource management, none of which would
have been possible without the innovation and thought leadership of South East
Water,” added Chris Russo, TPG Telecom General Manager Enterprise and
Government Customer Sales & Solutions.
