Telit Cinterion has announced a smart grid solution developed in collaboration with Netinium BV, a provider of vendor-neutral head-end systems (HES) for smart metering and grid applications. By integrating Telit Cinterion’s NExT eSIM provisioning system into Netinium’s Smart Energy Platform, the solution reduces the cost, complexity, and time required to deploy and manage smart meters throughout their lifecycle, including the ability to perform remote eSIM profile swaps when networks change.
Grid operators, energy suppliers, and third-party service providers rely on HES to remotely manage smart meters, gateways, data concentrators, and other smart devices. The HES handles tasks like meter readings and firmware updates for meter modules. Until now, HES vendors have not offered integrated SIM profile and subscription management, meaning utilities had to depend on separate platforms from SIM vendors or mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs).
Netinium’s Smart Energy Platform, now incorporating Telit Cinterion’s NExT eSIM provisioning system, becomes the world’s first HES to offer SIM profile and subscription management. This GSMA SGP.32-compliant solution simplifies smart meter life cycle management by integrating eSIM control with device management, resolving several long-standing challenges for utilities:
- The risk of failure due to separate HES and SIM management platforms
- Inconsistent protocols and messaging formats
- Synchronising tasks across multiple automation systems
- Varying access requirements for third-party platforms (interfaces, APIs, etc.)
- A complex security framework with increased vulnerability
- Longer test and validation times for the system architecture
This integrated platform streamlines operations for utility staff by consolidating smart meter and eSIM management into a single system. It simplifies eSIM adjustments, making them as routine as configuring a meter. For example, eSIM profile changes can be scheduled automatically, or carried out as part of meter installation or replacement procedures.
“eSIM technology and the GSMA SGP.32 spec fundamentally change how smart meters are provisioned, managed and secured,” said Jose Sanchez, Senior Director Product Management, IoT Connectivity & Services at Telit Cinterion. “Our partnership with Netinium takes those foundational elements to the next level by layering on a comprehensive suite of capabilities that directly address the top challenges to smart grid deployment and operation.”
“Innovators seek out other innovators, which makes Telit Cinterion an ideal partner,” added Ferry Cserep, CEO at Netinium. “Telit Cinterion’s NExT eSIM provisioning service offers the ultimate in flexibility throughout the smart meter lifecycle. Integrating it into our HES provides our customers with industry-leading simplicity and security.”
