Vantron has secured European and US regulatory and safety certifications for a compact Wi-Fi HaLow module designed for industrial internet of things (IoT) and smart infrastructure applications, clearing the way for mass production.
The VT-MOB-AH-8108 module, announced by chipmaker Morse Micro on 15th October, is built around the Australian company’s MM8108 system-on-chip (SoC). It has received CE, FCC and UL certification, giving manufacturers a pre-certified connectivity component for products intended for European and North American markets.
The module measures 11 x 10 x 2.28mm and supports data rates of up to 43.3Mbps across channel bandwidths of 1, 2, 4 and 8MHz. It also incorporates WPA3 security and supports both station and access point modes.
Wi-Fi HaLow, based on the IEEE 802.11ah standard, operates in sub-gigahertz frequency bands to provide longer-range connectivity and better penetration through obstacles than conventional 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi. The technology is aimed at connected devices that need to communicate over greater distances without the power demands associated with some other wireless options.
Vantron is targeting the module at industrial IoT, smart infrastructure and Edge AI-enabled security applications, where devices may need to transmit data across large sites or operate with limited power.
“With certification in North America and Europe completed, device makers can accelerate their product development activities with confidence,” said Michael De Nil, Co-Founder and Chief Executive of Morse Micro.
The certification could simplify product development for manufacturers by allowing them to use a module that has already undergone the relevant testing, although certification of the component does not necessarily remove the need for product-level compliance assessments.
Jin Zhang, Product Director at Vantron, said the certification would allow the company to combine Morse Micro’s wireless technology with its embedded design and system integration expertise. “Our customers need reliable connectivity that fits their products and deployment environments,” Zhang said.
The VT-MOB-AH-8108 is the latest addition to Vantron’s range of Wi-Fi HaLow modules, extending a partnership with Morse Micro that includes other modules and finished products.
