Rohde & Schwarz has successfully completed Skylo’s comprehensive testing plan for devices operating on Narrowband-IoT in Non-Terrestrial Networks (NB-NTN). This achievement also enables SMS functionality over NB-NTN, paving the way for uninterrupted connectivity on smartphones, wearables, and IoT devices.
Through collaboration with Skylo Technologies, Rohde & Schwarz has verified and validated all test cases outlined in Skylo’s network operator acceptance criteria. This includes newly introduced test cases for SMS over NB-NTN, conducted using the advanced CMW500 wideband radio communication tester. This marks a crucial milestone in device certification, supporting the broader adoption of NB-NTN technology.
Skylo, a global Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) service provider, utilises satellite spectrum from multiple partner constellations, enabling smartphones and IoT devices to connect directly via existing satellites. This technology ensures reliable communication in remote areas lacking traditional network coverage. Skylo’s rigorous certification process ensures that devices adhere to strict performance and reliability standards.
The successful validation of SMS over NB-NTN represents a key development in extending satellite connectivity to consumer devices. As a result, users of smartphones and wearables can access messaging services regardless of location, significantly enhancing safety and communication capabilities in areas without terrestrial network access.
