Skylo has today announced the inclusion of an innovative satellite SOS feature in the new Google Pixel 9 series in the US, ushering in a new era of connectivity and reassurance for Pixel users. For the first time, when cellular or Wi-Fi networks are unavailable in the US, Pixel users will have the ability to connect to emergency services via satellite, allowing them to seek assistance and share their location with contacts.
Skylo, a Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) service provider, powers this satellite service for the Google Pixel 9 series through its Radio Access Network infrastructure, which is deployed in Earth Stations across the globe. This infrastructure is supported by partnerships with multiple satellite operators worldwide, utilising dedicated, licensed mobile satellite spectrum for connectivity. Skylo’s 24/7 global network operations centre, with its Cloud-native, carrier-class network core, provides the operational support necessary for seamless integration with mobile carrier partners around the world.
To achieve this technical feat, Skylo has collaborated closely with the Pixel and Android teams at Google to develop a complete ‘direct-to-device’ satellite connectivity experience. This milestone represents a significant step forward in Skylo’s mission to make satellite connectivity both accessible and affordable for all. Founded in 2017, Skylo has transmitted over 10 million messages via its satellite network and has nearly 100 patent filings globally, focusing on optimising satellite links to cellular devices across various constellations. Skylo’s broad accessibility, scalability, and commercial reach are a testament to its innovative efforts.
“Skylo is honoured to be the satellite service partner for Google Pixel. Our service has been meticulously developed with both the Pixel and Android teams at Google as well as all our supporting ecosystem partners,” said Parth Trivedi, Co-Founder and CEO of Skylo.
