Scottish connectivity company CSignum has raised £2.6 million to expand commercial deployment of its EM2 wireless technology, with water quality monitoring among the applications targeted by the company.
The Bathgate-based company uses electromagnetic field signalling to transmit data through water, ice, rock, soil and concrete, removing the need for conventional cabling in environments where radio and other wireless technologies can struggle.
The new funding comes from existing investors Archangels, PXN Ventures and Scottish Enterprise, alongside the British Business Bank and US-based angel investors. CSignum said the round would fund commercial expansion and manufacturing scale-up.
The company has moved from pilot projects to volume deployments since raising £6 million from the same investor group in April 2025. It now has deployments with several UK water utilities, as well as customers overseas.
Water monitoring is one of the main drivers of demand. Under the UK government’s AMP8 investment programme, water companies are required to increase monitoring of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and sewage discharge points. CSignum said its technology is being used by several UK utilities to support these measurements.
The company is also pursuing applications beyond water utilities. It is working on a ‘smart buoy’ project in the Gulf of Mexico and has completed pilots with two US water quality monitoring organisations. In Asia, it is supporting through-ground sensing for a large-scale critical infrastructure project.
CSignum said the technology could help connect sensors in locations that are difficult or expensive to reach using conventional networks, potentially providing data to wider IoT and AI systems.
The company has also appointed John Nicholls as Chief Executive, replacing Jonathan Reeves, who will become Chief Strategy Officer. Nicholls has held CEO and Chief Commercial Officer roles across sectors including photonics, quantum technologies, space, semiconductors and EV infrastructure, with experience in international expansion, fundraising, M&A and strategic partnerships.
CSignum was founded in 2020 and is headquartered near Edinburgh, with staff in the UK, US and EU.
The company said the latest investment would allow it to move further from technology development and pilots towards larger commercial deployments.
