Canberra is planning to upgrade a further 16,000 streetlights with smart lighting technology from Itron, expanding its connected lighting network to more than 47,000 assets.
The ACT Government’s City and Environment Directorate (CED) is extending its collaboration with Itron and delivery partner Omexom following seven years of operating the city’s smart lighting infrastructure.
The planned expansion will take the number of streetlights equipped with Itron’s Networked Lighting Controllers (NLCs) from approximately 31,000 to more than 47,000. This represents nearly 60% of the ACT Government’s streetlighting estate, which comprises more than 83,000 lights.
The existing network uses Itron’s CityEdge software platform to provide visibility and control of streetlighting operations, alongside remote monitoring of individual lighting assets. Its connectivity infrastructure is designed to support remote management and adaptive lighting control.
The ACT Government says the technology has delivered energy savings and improved operational visibility over the past seven years. The further deployment is intended to support public safety, reduce maintenance costs and improve the efficiency of streetlighting operations.
Omexom, part of VINCI Energies, will continue as the project’s delivery partner and contract holder, responsible for integrating, deploying and operating the solution. Itron will supply the technology, including lighting controllers, its Gen5 network and CityEdge software.
Beyond streetlighting, the platform could provide a foundation for additional connected city applications, including environmental monitoring and traffic analytics. However, the announcement does not specify when these applications might be introduced.
The expansion forms part of the ACT Government’s wider sustainability and smart city objectives, which include investment in public transport and active travel infrastructure.
