Athom announced over-the-air firmware updates for Matter, Z-Wave, and Zigbee devices in Homey. Users can initiate updates from the Homey Mobile App or Homey Web App. Homey handles the rest, including delivery, progress tracking, and user notification.
Manufacturers regularly release updates for smart home devices to fix issues, improve stability, or add features. Until now, installing them often meant switching to a separate app or hub. With this release, users can update Matter, Z-Wave, and Zigbee devices without leaving Homey.
For Z-Wave and Zigbee devices, updates are delivered through the manufacturer’s app in the Homey App Store. Manufacturers including IKEA, Aeotec, INNR, Niko, Inovelli, Zooz, frient, ThirdReality, EcoDim, HeatIt, Namron, amina, CTM Lyng, and Nous have already added support, with more to follow.
For Matter devices, manufacturers are not required to update their Homey app. Homey fetches available updates through the Connectivity Standards Alliance’s Distributed Compliance Ledger.
“Device firmware rarely gets updated because the process is cumbersome,” said Stefan Witkamp, CEO at Athom. “By handling device updates inside Homey, we make it practical for both users and developers. That makes the whole smart home more dependable.”
