In the latest episode of IoT Unplugged, Märt Kroodo, CEO and Founder of 1oT spoke to IoT Insider about the company’s unique approach to connectivity, which involved managing partnerships with telecoms on behalf of their customers.
1oT offers its customers with a connectivity management platform that aggregates different telecoms into one service, which means they can switch between telecom profiles and avoid common scenarios such as network shutdowns caused by agreements lapsing.
The company traces its roots to 2016, when it was founded because of the “huge potential” Kroodo saw in adding value-added services on top of the telecoms industry. At the time of founding, IoT was a market that was rapidly gathering pace and interest for its transformative experience when deployed in other sectors.
Kroodo also had the foresight to see that as the IoT industry picked up, and the number of connected devices continued to grow – in parallel with the advent of eSIM technology – that it could aggregate multiple telecoms under one service and SIM so that its customers, companies who need global connectivity to operate their businesses, don’t need to deal with telecoms. 1oT does this work for them.
By developing their platform in-house, managing it and controlling it, it is able to ensure a high quality of service and experience for customers – as well as owning their eSIM infrastructure.
He spoke about a market that had changed significantly on the podcast, as telecoms were characterised as initially conservative during the explosive growth of IoT. This presented a challenge for 1oT, who depended on the telecoms getting on board with their business model.
“The telecoms were used to providing connectivity for consumer devices like phones and tablets and so on,” said Kroodo. “But IoT companies need more besides connectivity, they also need to monitor everything, they need to debug, they need APIs to integrate with.
“Telecoms were not ready to cater [to] those needs on the market … But they are now. Now it’s more liberal, and … we have proved that [and] moved into the right direction with our service.”
Today 1oT has 12 different telecoms aggregated into its service, having “cherry picked” the best telecoms it believes will help its customers, and targeting use cases that require low or mid data volume.
