Ben Cade, CEO of Myriota spoke to IoT Insider in the latest episode of IoT Unplugged about satellite connectivity following the launch of their own satellite platform.
Myriota is a global telecommunications provider focused on sensor-based field intelligence, using satellite connectivity to enable better decision-making.
In the episode, Cade highlighted three key challenges and therefore barriers in making satellite IoT and sensing solutions viable; the simplicity, cost and reliability. He noted that in order for satellite IoT to be widely deployed – as the market appears to be burgeoning – the device needs to be affordable for mass deployment and dependable enough to function for years without maintenance.
Cade also discussed the need for a connectivity solution that caters to a fragmented IoT market, where innovative companies operate at small scales and often lack the resources to build large-scale devices. “There are thousands of companies wanting to do innovative things,” explained Cade. “The challenge with that is almost none of those companies are operating at a level of scale. There isn’t a Samsung, there isn’t a Google, for example, saying they’re going to deploy all these kinds of devices.”
Myriota’s approach involves offering a platform that partners can easily plug into, allowing them to quickly bring their solutions to market. Myriota’s recent hardware platform launch aims to support this next wave of IoT adoption.
Cade also touched on the challenges of deploying sensors in remote areas without terrestrial connectivity. Satellite IoT, he explained, is essential for these environments, as traditional connectivity covers only a small fraction of the world’s landmass.
“What gives us the greatest pleasure is seeing our partners solving important problems … Our focus is to work with them to make sure these solutions work out of the box,” Cade concluded.
