SK Telecom and Singtel have announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the development of next-generation telecommunications networks. Over the next two years, this partnership aims to drive innovation, improve network performance and security, and enhance customer experiences. The collaboration will focus on the use of artificial intelligence (AI), orchestration tools, and expanding knowledge in network virtualisation and other pivotal technologies necessary for progressing towards 6G.
The partnership will also concentrate on creating distinctive, innovative solutions to boost network capabilities, such as Edge-AI Infrastructure. This technology reduces the computational load on the cloud by utilising edge computing and performing AI inference, thereby improving connectivity and offering unique AI services. This initiative will enable operators to restore services more swiftly, enhancing the overall customer experience.
Additionally, SKT and Singtel plan to produce a white paper detailing their advancements in areas like virtualisation, slicing, and network evolution. This document aims to assist other telecom companies globally in leveraging the capabilities of 5G and preparing for 6G.
Kang Jong-ryeol, Head of ICT Infra, SK Telecom, said: “The collaboration between SKT and Singtel marks a significant first step in shaping the future of the global telecommunications industry. By combining the strengths of both companies, we aim to achieve significant advancements in next-generation communication technologies such as 6G and AI infrastructure.”
Tay Yeow Lian, Singtel’s Managing Director, Networks, said: “As a global leader in 5G technology, we’re keen to capitalize on the myriad of capabilities this technology has to offer, especially in the areas of network slicing and with the inclusion of AI. With SKT, we’re looking to not only enhance the experience of our customers but to also drive industry innovation and help us prepare for the evolution to 6G.”
