HIRO is driving innovation in Edge computing, hinting at the potential for smart city development. Vicor is continuing its Powering Innovation podcast series by featuring HIRO. The recent discussion delved into how Edge computing systems enhance Cloud computing capabilities, bringing them closer to essential areas like hospitals and smart cities. Fred Buining, CTO of HIRO, joined David Krakauer, VP of Corporate Marketing at Vicor, in the latest episode to shed light on the rapid growth of this technology.
As a Dutch entrepreneurial technology firm, HIRO specialises in creating compact, scalable Edge computing solutions that are instrumental in the development of new smart city designs, educational reforms, and medical advancements. The company’s flagship innovation, Edge-MicroDataCenters (EMDCs), offers robust hardware and software infrastructure, along with native services, to facilitate on-premise big data and AI processing.
These EMDCs can integrate various technologies such as CPU, GPU, FPGA, and NVMe (non-volatile memory express) into compact, containerized platforms, about the size of a shoebox, with power consumption ranging from 1.5kW to 500kW. They are fully solid-state and modular, designed for minimal maintenance and eliminating the need for special cooling systems.
Buining discussed the benefits of using EMDCs, highlighting their efficiency and the diverse projects and applications HIRO is currently powering. “Our EMDCs are highly efficient, resulting in nearly a 57% reduction in energy consumption for a smart factory we are involved with,” he stated. He also shared insights into the factors driving Edge computing and its current real-world applications.
