BYD has partnered with Australian connected vehicle technology provider Intelematics to introduce advanced emergency call capabilities across its vehicle range, beginning with the newly launched Sealion 8 SUV.
The agreement will see Intelematics’ connected car platform integrated into BYD vehicles sold in Australia, enabling features including Automatic Collision Notification (ACN) and emergency SOS services. The technology is expected to be rolled out progressively across future BYD models.
The partnership reflects growing adoption of connected vehicle technologies designed to improve post-crash response times by linking vehicles directly to emergency assistance services.
When a serious collision is detected, the system can automatically transmit vehicle and crash information to support faster intervention. Beyond providing GPS coordinates and voice communication, BYD’s implementation will deliver a broader set of telemetry data, including airbag deployment status, impact location, vehicle speed, direction of travel, and the number of occupants in the vehicle.
The deployment comes as vehicle manufacturers prepare for stricter safety assessment criteria. Australia’s Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has introduced enhanced post-crash safety requirements from 2026, encouraging manufacturers seeking a five-star rating to equip vehicles with eCall functionality.
Stephen Collins, Chief Operating Officer at BYD Australia, said the partnership formed part of the company’s broader strategy to enhance customer safety and vehicle connectivity.
“By integrating advanced eCall technology, we are strengthening customer trust, meeting safety expectations, and reinforcing BYD’s position as a brand known for innovation,” he said.
For Intelematics, the agreement expands the reach of a platform already supporting more than 950,000 connected vehicles across Australia and New Zealand. The company provides connected vehicle services for automotive brands including Toyota, Lexus, Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Genesis.
Rob Finney, General Manager at Intelematics, said richer crash data could help emergency responders assess incidents more effectively before arriving at the scene.
“By providing information such as airbag deployment, impact zones and occupant numbers, we support emergency services with clearer information, helping ensure the right help reaches the right place when it’s needed,” he said.
