LG Electronics (LG) is enhancing its position in the 5G private network market, regarded as essential infrastructure for future industries. The company has recently made a notable achievement by becoming the first in the 5G private network sector to receive the “Domestic Network Equipment Certification” from the Korea Association of Network Industries for its self-developed 5G private network solution.
This certification, awarded to products developed and manufactured in South Korea, is a crucial credential for supplying technology to public institutions. It signifies LG’s official recognition for successfully internalising key 5G private network technologies.
A 5G private network is a tailored solution designed for specific areas such as factories and buildings, providing high-speed data transfer and exceptional reliability. It serves as a critical foundation for innovations like digital transformation (DX), artificial intelligence (AI), and smart factory operations.
LG’s certified 5G private network solution utilises advanced software to manage functions typically handled by conventional 5G equipment, such as the Radio Access Network (RAN) and 5G Core. This software-based method enables faster data processing, enhanced stability, and the ability to upgrade the system without the need for hardware replacements, significantly reducing operational costs.
With its strong software capabilities, LG’s solution delivers customised 5G private networks tailored to the specific needs and environments of its clients. For example, it can create secure, isolated networks for those with high-security requirements or integrate external Cloud services for companies that frequently collaborate with external partners.
Beyond network deployment, LG’s solution includes a device control platform for managing connected devices seamlessly. This system supports LG’s own products, such as robots and digital signage, as well as clients’ existing equipment, including CCTV and smart safety devices, all connected through the 5G private network.
Following this domestic certification, LG is set to expand its focus on both enterprise and public 5G private network projects, targeting industries like smart factories and beyond.
LG recognises the vast potential of the 5G private network market and has invested heavily in developing its technology. The company holds around 30,000 telecommunications patents, including many related to 5G, placing it among the world’s leading innovators. Last year, LG formally added “facilities-based telecommunications business” to its portfolio, positioning itself for the large-scale commercialisation of its 5G solutions.
LG’s extensive experience with real-world deployments, including trials at its Tennessee factory, a smart factory in Chungbuk, a logistics centre in Incheon, and a university hospital in Seoul, further strengthens its expertise in the sector.
The global 5G private network market is forecast to grow significantly, from approximately $2 billion in 2023 to around $11.8 billion by 2028, with an annual growth rate of over 40%, according to research by MarketsandMarkets.
“We will continue to provide customsed 5G private network solutions for clients who need fast, stable networks, leveraging our outstanding 5G technology and operational expertise, accumulated in various sectors such as factories, logistics centres and hospitals,” said Lee Jun-sung, Vice President and Head of LG’s Private Network Business Development Department.
