In a significant development for Indonesia’s IoT sector, XL Axiata, a leading mobile operator in the country, has joined forces with Cisco to launch a Cloud-based IoT connectivity management solution.
With over 57.5 million subscribers, XL Axiata is committed to facilitating the growth of IoT enterprises amongst its users in a secure manner.
The number of IoT connections in Indonesia is expected to surge to roughly 404 million by 2028, tripling from current figures, with cellular connections predicted to account for a quarter of this growth. By 2032, cellular IoT connections are anticipated to reach 148 million. The management of large-scale IoT initiatives presents significant challenges, particularly due to the diversity of devices and their technological complexities, including cybersecurity concerns.
The newly introduced IoT platform is designed to simplify these complexities by offering a comprehensive architecture capable of handling diverse endpoints and platforms. It integrates artificial intelligence to power anomaly detection, enabling proactive identification and notification of any device or connectivity issues, thus enhancing service dependability.
Furthermore, the platform’s enterprise-grade, comprehensive security measures ensure the protection of users, devices, and critical infrastructure. This enables businesses to preemptively address unusual data or connectivity patterns through real-time monitoring and analytics. Additionally, the Connectivity+ IoT platform optimises cost management by automatically selecting the most suitable rate plan based on real-time usage data.
This suite of capabilities facilitates the rapid development of bespoke IoT solutions that cater to specific business requirements, all manageable through a single, user-friendly platform for a cohesive digital experience.
Yessie Yosetya, a director at XL Axiata, emphasised the importance of scalability, simplicity, and security in overcoming the complexities and security challenges inherent in IoT deployment. The Connectivity+ platform, according to Yosetya, fulfils these requirements, supporting the company’s mission to drive business innovation and contribute to the sustainable development of Indonesia’s smart cities.
As Indonesia advances towards its smart city goals, the efficient management of cellular IoT connectivity becomes increasingly vital. This collaboration between XL Axiata and Cisco aims to bolster the nation’s smart city initiatives by ensuring reliable connectivity and streamlined management of IoT services. It also paves the way for the introduction of new, large-scale IoT applications in the future, particularly those utilising 5G and other novel technologies.
XL Axiata seeks to broaden the reach of its IoT services, targeting sectors such as connected car OEMs, major financial institutions, electrical utility providers, security services, and fleet management companies.
Masum Mir, Senior Vice President at Cisco, reiterated the company’s commitment to delivering premier innovation to clients, enabling them to fully exploit technological advancements. Given Indonesia’s rapidly growing population and the swift digital transformation of its businesses, the partnership between XL Axiata and Cisco is set to significantly drive IoT adoption, making connected services more accessible, secure, and impactful for businesses of various sizes.
