The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has unveiled its state-of-the-art 5G O-RAN private network management solution Athena Orchestrator at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.
This platform introduces two features: intent-based interference mitigation (IM) for private networks and a diverse network planning tool incorporating reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) technology.
Building upon its foundational components—Athena Planner, Athena EMS, Athena RIC, and Athena Sensing—Athena Orchestrator introduces an intent-based system designed to elevate network optimisation and management. Debuting at MWC 2025, this feature interprets network administrators’ intentions for optimisation or configuration, enabling the automatic generation and analysis of network management strategies.
Athena Planner, an AI-driven tool designed to streamline 5G site survey planning, provides network deployment engineers with expert recommendations on the optimal number, placement, and configuration of 5G base stations, alongside comprehensive analytical reports.
Additionally, Athena EMS and Athena RIC are specifically tailored to optimise network performance for 5G O-RAN private networks. These components extend beyond the standard O-RAN specifications, offering a range of flexible applications that address diverse 5G requirements while enhancing deployment efficiency and sustainability.
The demonstration at MWC 2025 focused on applications for signal interference mitigation, showcasing the potential of intent-based technology to address interference challenges proactively. It also highlighted the tool’s ability to simulate and plan the deployment of diversified wireless network systems, including 5G and Wi-Fi technologies, while offering support for RIS signal simulations to enhance network performance and coverage.
