IoT Tech Expo Global in London provided the perfect meeting point for industry experts and thought leaders to gather together and share their insights into some of the most pressing topics and innovative technologies in the IoT space. IoT Insider, who was exhibiting at IoT Tech Expo Global, had the pleasure of taking part in interesting conversations with attendees, and watching insightful talks.
STL Partners, a telecoms consultants and research firm, presented their findings into the Edge computing market. Key findings included AI being integral to the Edge landscape, fewer but greater investments being made into Edge computing, and how utilities companies are currently exploring how they might enter into the Edge market.
“2024 was the most significant year for Edge computing investments,” said Tilly Gilbert, Director, Consulting & Edge Practice Lead, one half of the presentation team. “The value of the investment in the Edge market was the highest we have ever seen, but the number of investments is trending down and that’s because we’re seeing fewer but bigger investments in the Edge space. We see this as an indicator of a maturing market.”
“AI is a key driver of Edge computing today,” added Anna Boyle, Senior Consultant, the other half. “By 2030, we expect there to be over $150 billion in value driven by AI in the Edge computing market. We also found that computer vision will account for the vast majority of these revenues, more than any other use cases we looked at.”

Of the other use cases utilising AI, manufacturing, retail and transport are expected to account for 75% of Edge AI revenues by 2030, according to STL Partners’ research.
Milan Lalovic, Principal Researcher, 5G Mobile Core Research at BT Group also shared insights into the topic of Edge computing from the perspective of the telecommunications sector. He discussed how telcos had transitioned into Edge computing, and how they were thinking about 5G following significant investment into the technology. One point Lalovic raised in his talk was that telcos are looking for ways to monetise 5G Core because of this significant investment, through offering additional services such as the Edge Cloud.
“Telcos invested a lot of money into 5G and one of the advantages for that is [providing the] connectivity for Edge computing,” said Lalovic.
The IoT Insider team also had the opportunity to walk around the show floor and conduct short, succinct video interviews with exhibitors to learn more about the technologies they were emphasising this year. Keep your eyes peeled for these videos, as they will be launched on IoT insider’s up and coming YouTube channel, which will also host interviews from our podcast, IoT Unplugged.
