Toulouse Métropole has deployed 30,000 radio frequency identification (RFID) tags across its waste collection network in a bid to improve the identification and traceability of containers.
The project, awarded to RFID Discovery, part of Paragon ID, covers containers used by businesses, healthcare facilities and voluntary waste drop-off points across the French metropolitan area.
The high-frequency (HF) RFID tags are intended to help the municipality maintain a more accurate inventory of its waste containers and improve their tracking and maintenance.
To speed up installation, RFID Discovery developed a dedicated tool to apply and remove the tags, replacing a manual hammer-based process. The company worked with Toulouse Métropole on on-site testing before delivering the solution within a few weeks.
The municipality has also evaluated HF handheld readers supplied by RFID Discovery as part of its assessment of potential future improvements to waste collection operations.
The initial deployment focuses on identifying and tracking containers. The company has not disclosed whether the system will be integrated with collection vehicles or waste management software, or whether the project has delivered measurable improvements in operational efficiency.
The deployment illustrates how RFID can support asset identification in municipal services, although the longer-term benefits will depend on how the data is used to manage collection infrastructure.
