Semiconductors, crucial for the manufacturing of computers, smartphones, cars, refrigerators, and other electronic devices, play a pivotal role in enabling IoT. Reflecting this importance, the IOT Solutions World Congress (IOTSWC), a premier global event focused on industrial transformation through disruptive technologies, will this year place special emphasis on chip designers, manufacturers, and suppliers. The forthcoming edition of the IOT Solutions World Congress, scheduled from 21-24 May at the Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue, will assemble a prominent array of semiconductor chip manufacturers to exhibit their projects and products, instrumental in advancing industry digitisation and modernisation.
In alignment with the critical position of semiconductors in contemporary industry, the Government of Catalonia aims to bolster this sector within the region. At the IOT Solutions World Congress, it will consolidate numerous Catalan companies operating in this sphere into a single stand, alongside other global firms such as ST Microelectronics, Lacroix, Tessolve, and Würth Elektronik, showcasing their semiconductor-related projects and initiatives.
This endeavour aligns with the strategy devised by the Catalan Government to promote the semiconductor industry, culminating in the formation of the Catalan Semiconductor Alliance. This alliance, a collaborative effort among various ministries of the Government of Catalonia, companies, and research and innovation entities, strives to position Catalonia as a semiconductor industry leader in Europe.
Marc Tarragó, the Director of the show, remarked: “IOTSWC provides chip manufacturers with a prime opportunity to engage with new domestic and international clients during a pivotal phase in industry transformation.” He further noted, “We aim to elevate this segment, which is becoming increasingly significant, in an event that also reinforces its status as the foremost global platform for driving the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”
Albert Castellanos i Maduell, Secretary General for Enterprise and Competitiveness and CEO of ACCIÓ, highlighted: “Catalonia stands as a leading technological hub in Europe, distinguished by its vast number of companies, talent, and ability to integrate sectors across the entire economic landscape.” He added, “The Catalan Government is dedicated to advancing industries such as semiconductors and to fostering the international presence and growth of Catalan firms within this sector as a strategic and transformative force for our industry.”
According to the Semiconductor Industry Association, the global semiconductor market is projected to reach €490,977 million in 2023, marking an 8% decrease from 2022, with Taiwan leading global chip production, accounting for 60% of sales and surpassing both the United States and China.
Organised by Fira de Barcelona, IOTSWC 2024 is expected to attract 12,000 visitors from over 100 countries, featuring more than 400 exhibitors and a roster of 250 speakers and experts across 125 congress sessions.
The event will include four segments: Congress, Exhibition Area, Activities, and Security and Cybersecurity, offering a platform for innovation focused on knowledge exchange, disruptive trends, and practical solutions.
