STMicroelectronics is simplifying large-scale IoT deployments with new enhancements to its cellular communication module, facilitating the faster adoption of sustainable smart grids and industrial IoT applications.
The ST87M01 module platform is NB-IoT certified, with the option of an advanced embedded ST4SIM eSIM for seamless access to connectivity services. In addition, the modules now come pre-configured with Vodafone’s profile, allowing customers swift and straightforward access to Vodafone’s expansive global connectivity network.
Additionally, ST has integrated wireless Meter-Bus (wM-Bus) connectivity into the same module, providing an additional standardised communication channel for gathering data, such as household utility usage. The wM-Bus capability serves as a backup during cellular network disruptions and offers flexibility for drive-in or work-in meter readings.
Maddalena S.p.A selected the ST87M01 to enhance its advanced water-meter product line.
Filippo Fontanelli, CTO of Maddalena S.p.A, said: “Collaborating with ST has allowed us to integrate state-of-the-art NB-IoT technology, selecting the only ultra-compact industrial module in the market that provides certified cellular NB-IoT connectivity out of the box. This enables our new meters to provide unmatched speed in deployment to our customers. This collaboration underscores the growing importance of partnerships in the tech sector, allowing us to deliver reliable, high-performance solutions that meet the evolving demands of the market.”
“Our combined eSIM and NB-IoT solution in the module simplifies management and reduces system costs compared to integrating separate solutions, while ensuring data protection and extra-security,” said Domenico Arrigo, General Manager, Application Specific Product Division, STMicroelectronics. “And with the convenient option to load Vodafone’s mobile network profile, the ST87M01 delivers significant advantages for customers looking to deploy turnkey IoT solutions at scale.”
A key feature of the ST87M01 module is its software-defined radio, which allows dynamic switching between cellular NB-IoT and sub-GHz wM-Bus communication. This adaptability supports a range of use cases, with wM-Bus offering backup communication for increased resilience. The module also provides flexibility for embedding user code directly for simpler applications or connecting to a separate microcontroller for more complex scenarios.
In addition, the ST87M01 variant with Vodafone’s profile integrates NB-IoT with a multi-constellation GNSS receiver, enabling location-based applications such as remote worker safety monitoring, asset tracking, and intelligent logistics. The embedded GNSS receiver conserves power by operating during NB-IoT sleep intervals. All variants of the ST87M01 are industrial-grade qualified, housed in a compact 10.6mm x 12.8mm package, allowing designers to create reliable and cost-effective solutions with a minimal footprint.
By combining multi-connectivity and location capabilities, the ST87M01 platform is suited for industrial condition monitoring, factory automation, smart agriculture, environmental tracking, and smart infrastructure, buildings, and cities.
ST’s complete in-house development of the module and its components ensures full control over the bill of materials and supply chain, providing an unmatched level of product quality, security, and longevity in the market.
