Nordic Semiconductor has introduced the nRF7000 Wi-Fi companion IC, claiming to be the first company to offer a complete silicon-to-Cloud locationing solution that includes Wi-Fi, cellular IoT, and GNSS. This offering, supported by Nordic’s technical support, is designed to simplify and speed up the development of applications based on Wi-Fi locationing.
The nRF7000 is a low-power Wi-Fi 6 chip, optimised for scanning Wi-Fi networks on both the 2.4- and 5 GHz frequency bands. In conjunction with Nordic’s nRF91 Series cellular IoT System-in-Package (SiP), the nRF7000 facilitates SSID-based Wi-Fi locationing. Nordic’s SSID-based Wi-Fi locationing is designed to provide accurate location fixes efficiently, both indoors and outdoors, in various settings. This feature is particularly useful in environments where GNSS signals may be weak or interrupted, such as inside buildings or in densely built-up areas. Wi-Fi SSID scanning for locationing is a common feature in devices like smartphones.
The nRF7000 IC is specifically optimised for ultra-low power consumption in Wi-Fi SSID scanning and does not support Wi-Fi data communication. This optimisation aims to balance power consumption with location precision in Nordic’s Wi-Fi locationing solution.
