Deutsche Telekom has become the first European network operator, and among the first globally, to enable direct eSIM transfers between Android and iOS devices, a move that could simplify smartphone upgrades and platform switches for millions of users.
The functionality, now available to Deutsche Telekom customers, allows users to initiate the transfer directly from their new device, with secure authorisation from their existing phone, removing the need for additional apps or paperwork.
The company said the process is underpinned by the GSMA’s TS.43 standard, a dedicated server protocol that manages authorisation and ensures security and adaptability for future innovations.
Industry figures welcomed the development as a significant step for mobile interoperability. Kadams Radhakrishnan, Chief Technical Director at Lyca Mobile, described the launch as “a real breakthrough for the industry”, noting that switching eSIMs across platforms has traditionally been cumbersome, often requiring carrier intervention or full reactivation.
“Seamless eSIM transfers mean people can move between iOS and Android without friction, enjoy faster setups, and avoid unnecessary store visits,” Radhakrishnan said. “It’s a clear signal that the industry is maturing towards a fully digital, device-agnostic future.”
Deutsche Telekom said it plans to roll out the feature across its national companies in the near future. Analysts said wider adoption by other operators could accelerate the transition to fully digital mobile services and make eSIM technology more consumer-friendly.
