A new 5G-enabled workspace, the 5G Immersive Lab, is set to launch in Eldon Square’s Greys Quarter, offering businesses a platform to test new products and access cutting-edge virtual reality technology.
This initiative is being spearheaded by Digital Catapult with a £700,000 funding injection from the North of Tyne Combined Authority, will feature a Vodafone 5G standalone test bed along with immersive technologies such as virtual reality.
The facility will also provide co-working areas, meeting rooms, and event spaces. The initiative aims to help businesses grasp the functionalities of 5G and foster innovation by hosting technology workshops, business challenges, and demonstrations.
The full 5G Immersive Lab is expected to open later in the summer following the initial launch of the co-working space this spring. Vodafone will supply the communications technology, while tech membership organisation Dynamo North East will aid in identifying SMEs across the North of Tyne area to participate.
This project, linked to the Advanced Media Production studio at PROTO, forms part of a broader £3.5 million Innovation Accelerator programme aimed at overcoming barriers to 5G and future connectivity.
Late last year, the UK government launched a £40 million fund to spark local digital revolutions across the country in a bid to ‘unlock’ 5G and advanced wireless technologies. This is planned to aid in the acceleration of smarter and more connected communities to utilise the benefits.
