Bristol-based wireless mmWave company Blu Wireless and Nomad Digital announced the successful rollout of super-fast wireless connectivity to a key commuter line running through Silicon Valley, in California. Both companies implemented BLu Wireless’ mmWave wireless system, LightningBlu, to provide onboard Wi-Fi for Caltrain’s commuter railway service.
The collaboration was showcased at InnoTrans, a trade fair which ran from 24-27 September in Berlin, Germany.
“This project marks an important milestone for Blu Wireless, demonstrating our ability to deliver a world-leading mmWave solution that meets the unique demands of the railway environment,” commented Mark Barrett, Chief Commercial Officer for Blu Wireless. “Our partnership with Nomad Digital has been key in successfully implementing this pioneering LightningBlu mmWave technology.”
“Collaborating with Blu Wireless has enabled us to apply our extensive experience in the rail technology space to deliver an advanced solution for high-speed wireless connectivity with Caltrain, improving passenger experience and setting a new standard for digital connectivity in the San Francisco area,” added Jeremy Haskins, Connectivity & Services Solution Director from Alstom.
Key features of LightningBlu include:
- Minimal interference with other systems due to the use of the unlicensed 57-71 GHz spectrum
- Extended range between access points (approximately 1.2 km) compared to traditional Wi-Fi solutions (400-500 metres)
- Reduced infrastructure needs with fewer access points required along the route
Blu Wireless and Nomad Digital are keen to continue their new partnership and celebrated its success at the latest edition of InnoTrans, with plans to explore applications across a range of rail environments including metro systems, regional railways and airports.
