EnOcean is making a substantial contribution to the global fight against climate change. Its pioneering energy harvesting wireless technology is currently preventing over 1.4 million tons of CO2 emissions annually from entering the atmosphere. This significant environmental benefit is a result of EnOcean’s technology being implemented in smart-building systems across more than one million premises worldwide.
In partnership with SET Ventures, EnOcean has measured the energy savings delivered by its devices, which average a 15% reduction in a building’s energy consumption. EnOcean’s products currently oversee approximately 221 million square meters of floorspace, equivalent to around 74,000 football pitches. With the continued distribution of more sensors to the market, these annual savings are anticipated to increase further.

EnOcean’s wireless building-automation products are based on energy harvesting, deriving power from environmental sources like motion, light, and temperature differences. This negates the need for batteries and power cords. EnOcean’s products, supporting various wireless standards such as Bluetooth, Zigbee, and the EnOcean radio protocol, range from kinetic switches and self-powered sensors to gateways, actuators, configuration tools, and the SmartServer IoT edge device. These products easily integrate into existing Wi-Fi access points from Aruba Networks, enabling simple installations without complex cabling or additional gateways.
EnOcean’s products interact with heating, air conditioning, and lighting systems; they monitor occupancy and people flow, automatically adjusting settings for optimal user convenience and energy saving. Their battery-free and maintenance-free nature removes the need for regular servicing and battery replacements, ensuring consistent, dependable performance and significantly reducing electronic waste and operational disruptions. Their wireless, self-powered design facilitates easy installation, allowing for efficient, eco-friendly integration into any building infrastructure using a “Peel & Stick” approach.
The importance of EnOcean’s energy-efficient solutions is further highlighted by the upcoming Buildings Energy Act (Gebäudeenergiegesetz, GEG 2024) in Germany, set to come into effect on 1 January 2024. This legislation emphasises building automation in non-residential buildings to reduce CO2 emissions. Aligned with the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), which targets carbon-neutral building operation by 2050 and a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, GEG 2024 underscores the necessity for energy controls and self-regulating devices for room temperature control in buildings with over 290 kW of heating or cooling power.
