Small Cell Forum (SCF) has published Stadium & Sports Venue Connectivity, a new industry guide setting out small cell deployment models for high-density venue environments.
Stadiums, sports arenas and live event venues represent some of the most complex in building connectivity scenarios, combining extreme user density with significant capacity and operational network requirements.
The new guide, aimed at promoting the various cellular options to venue owners and IT staff at stadiums, explains the deployment approaches available, including shared infrastructure, neutral host models, Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), small cell networks and private networks. It outlines the advantages and limitations of each approach and considers where hybrid models are most adopted. The guide also examines how 5G Standalone, shared spectrum and mmWave can support scalable, future-ready venue networks.
Crucially it lists the benefits of enhanced coverage and better data speeds, generating more digital PoS opportunities for venues and immersive experiences for fans. Case studies by SCF members from major international sports venues are included and illustrate how different deployment strategies have been implemented to address capacity, coverage and operational performance requirements.
Simon Fletcher, Chief Strategy O icer at Small Cell Forum, expands: “High-density venues like stadiums bring together many of the trends shaping the wider small cell ecosystem, including neutral host deployments, infrastructure sharing and the evolution toward 5G Standalone. There is no single model that fits all environment and hybrid systems are often deployed. This guide provides an objective overview of the available deployment options. And it showcases a range of real case studies from stadiums around the world to give a sense of what is already being done and what the benefits are for stadium owners in terms of monetising new digital services.”
The topic will also be explored at Small Cells World Summit 2026, 2-3 June 2026, London, UK, in a session dedicated to next generation networks for event venues.
Topics will include:
- Bringing AI into venues to deliver world-class user experiences
- Beyond the stadium: The rise of smart campuses and extended indoor/outdoor
coverage
- Monetizing venue connectivity: From fan engagement to operational intelligence
- The stadiums connectivity blueprint: lessons for large scale wireless deployments.
