Jeanhee Lee, Head of Marketing Communications at bitsensing spoke to IoT Insider about the evolution and advantages of radar technology on the latest episode of IoT Unplugged.
bitsensing, a company founded by Jae-Eun Lee in 2018, was established following a tragic accident on Incheon Bridge in Seoul, where radar technology was recognised as one that could enhance automotive safety by offering better visibility solutions for vehicles.
The applications of radar technology aren’t limited just to automotive, Lee shared, but also in smart cities and the healthcare industry, which can be partly attributed to the evolution of the technology.
Radar can be traced back to the late 19th century where it was utilised for improved detection and tracking systems particularly for warfare, and development of autonomous automotive radar systems began in the 1970s, with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) gaining in popularity in the 1990s to 2000s.
Providing one example of where bitsensing’s technology was involved, Lee highlighted the city of Verona, where the company installed its traffic sensors, its TIMOS solution, at a gateway in the city of Verona, an especially busy and complex intersection that oversees lots of traffic.
“TIMOS was chosen because it integrates Edge AI computing directly into the radar sensor, allowing the city to eliminate any external PCs and bulky hardware, which is quite critical for the preservation of historic sites,” explained Lee.
AI is playing an important role in improving the performance of radar solutions, such as helping radar to not only detect objects but to estimate the length, as well as predicting whether pedestrians are going to cross a street, or if another vehicle will change lanes.
