In the latest episode of season 3 of IoT Unplugged, Editor Caitlin Gittins speaks to Phil Beecher, President and CEO of Wi-SUN Alliance on how wireless mesh networks are providing a key role in developing the smart cities of the future.
The Alliance, which was formed in 2012, was initially focused on large-scale network deployments happening within the utility industries. Initial customers Pacific Gas and Florida Power & Light didn’t want to get locked into a single vendor to supply communications equipment. The Alliance later expanded to smart city applications such as street lighting and pollution monitoring and today, its aim is to deliver large-scale interoperable networks for critical infrastructure including utilities and smart cities.
Beecher emphasised the advantages of wireless mesh networks, which allow devices to communicate through neighbouring devices, enhancing connectivity in dense urban environments and overcoming obstacles like buildings.
“In dense urban environments, there’s often a problem with connectivity, either from technologies like cellular or other LPWAN technologies, where devices are buried in these urban canyons of glass or concrete or steel,” explained Beecher. “Wireless mesh technology works particularly well there.”
The conversation also covered the challenges and opportunities in smart city connectivity, with a focus on cybersecurity, interoperability, and future-proofing. Beecher explained that Wi-SUN technology uses certificate-based security to ensure devices are authenticated and communications are secure. He also mentioned the importance of interoperability, achieved through the Alliance’s testing and certification programme, allowing devices from different manufacturers to work together seamlessly.
Beecher concluded this episode of the podcast by advising cities and utilities to choose standards-based, interoperable solutions to protect their investments and ensure long-term viability.
