In the latest episode of IoT Unplugged, IoT Insider’s Editor spoke to Piyush Sevalia, Executive Vice President of Marketing at SiTime Corp about how micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) timing devices are revolutionising timing solutions, particularly in the rapidly evolving areas of IoT deployment, 5G, and Edge computing.
During the podcast, Sevalia highlighted the advantages in using MEMS time devices compared with traditional timing solutions, explaining that in the IoT space they have several advantages: they assist with the long battery life requirements of IoT devices; they offer precision and accuracy, which help with saving power; and are resilient.
In the emerging technology space such as 5G networks and Edge computing, MEMS timing devices offer significant benefits, Sevalia explained. For 5G infrastructure, they ensure high bandwidth and low latency, even in non-pristine environments subject to vibrations and temperature fluctuations. In Edge computing and data centres, MEMS devices provide enhanced power supply noise rejection and temperature stability, supporting the heavy data processing demands of applications like AI and machine learning.
The real world applications for MEMS are demonstrated in seismic sensors, ocean monitoring equipment, factory automation, and consumer electronics like wearables and security cameras. “We operate in devices which sit on the floor of the ocean, especially in countries like Japan where the tsunami and earthquake threat is very real, as we’ve seen recently in the last 10, 15 years,” explained Sevalia.
The adoption of MEMS timing devices is steadily growing, and whether companies are looking for faster speed in networks, more processing power in computing environments, or lower power consumption, these timing devices target exactly that.
