Every month on IoT Insider, we feature a wide range of contributed articles from industry experts in our insights section, on topics anywhere from impending legislation to understanding connectivity technologies and the ever-evolving threat landscape. In the first of this series, we pick out our favourite stories worth a read published in August.
This August, we took a look at natural language processing and its impact on IoT from the perspective of smart homes; why Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) networks are best for IIoT, automotive and ProAV sectors; understanding the requirements of the NIS2 Directive; and the growing role of satellite technology in environmental monitoring. Read on to find out more.
1. How Natural Language Processing (NLP) impacts the IoT
Zachary Amos, Features Editor of ReHack dug into natural language processing and IoT as technologies that are enabling, “more intuitive and efficient interactions between human devices”. He wrote about the opportunities that the integration of NLP in IoT opens up, including voice-activated devices like the Amazon Alexa and user personalisation.
2. Why TSN is the foundation for converged networks
Dave Cavalcanti, President of the Avnu Alliance shared his perspective that Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) provides the answer to the need for reducing operational complexity and expenditure while optimising performance and scalability.
“It’s for this reason that Avnu Alliance … launched the ‘Component Certification Program’ earlier this year,” he wrote. “The program is enabling manufacturers across various markets to guarantee their components meet the essential requirements defined by TSN standards.”
3. Navigating the NIS2 and CER Directives
Jos Beernink, VP EMEA at Milestone Systems wrote about the NIS2 Directive, which is set to come into force this October, deep diving into meeting requirements, responding to cyber attacks and supply chain security.
“The NIS2 and CER Directives together represent a holistic approach to securing and strengthening the resilience of critical infrastructure across the EU,” Beernink wrote.
4. The contribution of satellite IoT in environmental sustainability
Alastair MacLeod, CEO of Ground Control discussed environmental monitoring as one area where satellite IoT technology is supporting sustainability.
“A common scenario sees a form of LWPAN used for networking multiple sensors over a wide area,” wrote MacLeod. “The data is aggregated in a gateway, and optimised for transmission over satellite.”
