Itron, a company dedicated to solutions for utilities and municipalities to oversee energy and water resources, is teaming up with Cairns Regional Council (Council), situated in Queensland, Australia. Their collaboration aims to implement Itron’s intelligent connectivity and analytic solution, featuring Intelis wSource NB-IoT water meters and the utility’s existing mesh network technology utilising Itron’s unified Temetra NB-IoT digital platform for data collection and management.
Over the next three years, the Itron solution will be integrated into Council’s comprehensive water security plan to leverage technology for enhanced water leak detection and customer service.
This initiative expands upon phase one of the Council’s smart water network project, which entailed an initial deployment of Itron’s Intelis ultrasonic water meters and integrated IoT network solution. In this subsequent phase, Itron and the Council are collaborating to deploy additional Intelis smart water meters, managed by Itron’s Temetra NB-IoT digital platform, to enhance data collection, tracking, and management across the network.
Itron’s intelligent connectivity solution will enable the Council to address various operational water-related challenges. Upon deployment of the Intelis wSource water meters and NB-IoT digital platform, the Council stands to benefit from:
- Expedited Identification of Water Leaks: Temetra enhances visibility before and after the meter, aiding in the mitigation of non-revenue water losses within the distribution system.
- Enhanced Customer Experience: Leveraging the Intelis NB-IoT water meter, the Council can empower customers to manage water consumption more effectively through data-driven insights.
- Prolonged Meter Lifespan: The Intelis NB-IoT water meter boasts durable components and battery longevity designed to endure harsh conditions, facilitating a 15-year operational lifespan.
- Cost Reduction: Maintaining accuracy in adverse conditions, the Intelis NB-IoT water meter delivers enduring performance, thereby reducing costs and minimizing the need for repairs and replacements.
Don Reeves, Senior Vice President of Outcomes at Itron, remarked: “With water scarcity becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide, adopting a proactive approach to implementing a fully integrated water AMI solution sets a precedent for other utilities and municipalities. It ensures that their water infrastructure is equipped to tackle future challenges.” Reeves added, “At Itron, we are enthusiastic about continuing our collaboration with the Council to assist the utility in preparing for heightened water demand and asset management complexities.”
