DB Cargo is now implementing the IoTgo Track-Solar rail solution from Giesecke+Devrient (G+D), for efficient, sustainable, and maintenance-free tracking.
Conventional electronic devices often struggle in the harsh environmental conditions of rail transport. G+D, with decades of expertise in the transport and logistics sector, offers a Telematics-as-a-Service (TaaS) approach that provides a solution for effortlessly monitoring and managing goods through integrated hardware, connectivity, and IoT platforms.
Drawing on this experience, G+D has developed IoTgo Track-Solar rail, a solution specifically designed for rail freight transport that addresses complex tracking challenges and adheres to the rail industry’s strict certification standards. DB Cargo chose this G+D solution after a tender process, recognising its comprehensive functions, durability, and precise location tracking of individual freight cars.
The IoTgo Track-Solar rail solution from G+D includes a robust, reliable, and efficient solar-powered telematics unit designed for autonomous, maintenance-free asset tracking and monitoring. Accurate location tracking is ensured by precise GPS. The device boasts an IP69K-rated housing for protection against dust and water, a flame-retardant material with high fire resistance, and an integrated shock sensor.
This IoT device enables real-time transmission of location data for all freight cars without needing an external power supply. Device configuration changes can be made directly over the air (OTA). The solar cell and 27Ah battery support a continuous power supply for location-independent operation, enabling tracking for several months at low transmission intervals even without sunlight. Track-Solar can be installed wirelessly on any surface in just a few minutes, making it well suited for continuous tracking and monitoring of a vehicle fleet.
As a mobile gateway, Track-Solar rail connects freight cars to the DB data landscape, turning them into active components of an intelligent IoT ecosystem. Sensor and telematics data provide accurate position and movement data in real time. This empowers transport and logistics companies to plan the optimal deployment of all freight cars, resulting in increased transparency, better utilisation, and data-based process optimisation in rail operations.
“Maintaining and operating hardware for real-time tracking in freight transport can be time-consuming, complex, and costly,” said Johannes Forster, Head of Business Line IoT Solutions, G+D. “As a leading provider of security tech and IoT connectivity solutions, G+D has set a new milestone with its IoTgo Track-Solar rail tracking solution, specifically designed for use in rail freight transport. G+D’s innovative and, thanks to solar power, sustainable tracking device enables DB Cargo to further optimise its internal processes with data-driven decisions, thereby also reducing costs.”
