On 29 April, data released by recruitment company Randstad revealed a decline in the construction workforce, dropping from 2.6 million individuals in 2008 to 2.1 million in 2023.
The industry anticipates the need to recruit up to half a million additional workers in the upcoming years. Compounding this issue, significant projects like the Hinkley C nuclear plant and the HS2 rail will place further strain on the workforce.
However, merely increasing the number of workers is not an immediate solution for this challenge. The construction sector, known for its slow uptake of new technologies, must undergo digital transformation and embrace innovative technologies to enhance productivity and safety. These advancements will positively impact both recruitment and staff retention.
A study conducted by the Royal Institution of British Architects revealed that although 41% of respondents were utilising AI, 36% perceived it as a potential threat.
Additionally, a report from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in 2023 indicated that only 18% of surveyors had implemented digital technologies in the majority of their projects.
Chris Wilson, Senior Sales Director (UK & Ireland) at Trimble, said: “With an ageing workforce and an ever-growing list of increasingly important construction projects, many developed countries are finding it tough to keep up with the demand. This is one structural barrier for the industry to tackle – another, just as important, is its approach to new technologies.
“While many industries are rapidly modernising, there are still some UK contractors hesitant to adopt new tech such as AI, Digital Twins, machine control, or even something like a digital workforce management platform. These tools, as well as upskilling your workforce to use them effectively, will be key to maximising productivity and creating resilient infrastructure that’s made on time and within budget.”
