EXA Infrastructure, one of Europe’s largest dedicated digital infrastructure platform, has reached a key milestone in its network expansion plans by extending its Dense Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (DWDM) backbone into Finland. This expansion will connect Helsinki to Stockholm, bolstering the company’s presence in the Nordics and extending its reach to 37 countries across Europe and North America.
This strategic move aims to broaden EXA’s service offerings—such as 400G and Spectrum—to its existing customer base, while promoting greater competition within the local market. With demand in Finland’s market expected to grow at a CAGR of 32% over the next five years, as reported by Telegeography, the region is poised for significant growth. The increase in demand is partly due to the adoption of artificial intelligence technologies, as Finland holds the highest concentration of data centre capacity in the Nordics, nearing 240MW, primarily centred in Helsinki.
Earlier this year, EXA Infrastructure formed a strategic partnership with Bulk Infrastructure on the Havfrue Transatlantic system, connecting the US to Norway and Denmark. The new extension into Finland further integrates the Havfrue system into EXA’s expansive digital network, providing a direct and efficient connection between the US and Finland, bypassing the FLAP markets.
“This investment opens Finland as a new market for EXA, aligning with our vision of connecting more strategic locations to our network. Finland is emerging as a key hub for subsea cable systems and hyperscale data centres, and we are proud to contribute to the country’s infrastructure development with our advanced network,” said Steve Roberts, Senior Vice President of Strategic Investments at EXA Infrastructure.
“The Nordic countries are rapidly emerging as Europe’s new digital infrastructure hub, driven by the availability of abundant green energy. The region is attracting major investments from global Cloud hyperscalers and multi-tenant data centre providers. This is driving an incredible demand for resilient, scalable and diverse connectivity infrastructure to fuel the growth of this dynamic ecosystem,” added Jim Fagan, CEO of EXA Infrastructure.
