At embedded world, MediaTek unveiled its latest Edge-AI IoT platforms, the Genio 720 and Genio 520. These new additions to the Genio series support generative AI models, human-machine interface (HMI) applications, multimedia, and connectivity features for smart home, retail, industrial, and commercial IoT devices.
The Genio 720 and Genio 520 provide up to 10 TOPS of processing power through MediaTek’s 8th-generation Neural Processing Unit (NPU), which delivers full hardware acceleration for transformer and convolutional neural network (CNN) models. Both platforms support up to 16GB of LPDDR5 memory, enabling data-intensive Edge-optimised large language models (LLMs) such as Llama, Gemini, Phi, and DeepSeek. MediaTek’s AI ecosystem allows developers to integrate leading language models and frameworks to deploy multi-modal generative AI applications efficiently.
CK Wang, General Manager of the IoT Business Group at MediaTek, stated:
“The Genio 720 and Genio 520 bring generative AI capabilities on-device, providing a seamless user experience while maintaining data privacy. With our integration of NVIDIA TAO for Edge AI applications, developers can scale their designs across different products and form factors, from smart retail displays to advanced industrial HMI applications.”
Manufactured using a 6nm process, the Genio 720 and Genio 520 incorporate an octa-core CPU with two Arm Cortex-A78 processors and six Cortex-A55 processors, balancing performance and power efficiency. These platforms are designed for low-power operation, making them suitable for fanless enclosures and battery-powered devices.
With a range of multimedia capabilities, the Genio 720 and 520 are suited for commercial displays, smart retail devices, and HMI applications. Their unified hardware and software design enables developers to create applications that can run across multiple devices, with options for customisation.
The platforms support Open Standard Module (OSM) reference designs to ensure power and signal integrity, reducing development time. MediaTek partners plan to introduce OSM-based solutions in the second half of the year to accelerate time-to-market for various applications.
Key features of Genio 720 and 520:
- Support for one 4K/5K ultrawide display or dual 2.5K displays
- Power-efficient 4K H.264/H.265 video decoding and encoding
