IoT Unplugged: S5:E8 – Addressing a fragmented IoT market

Sameer Sharma, General Manager of IoT business at MediaTek featured on IoT Unplugged as he spoke about the fragmented IoT market

Sameer Sharma, General Manager of IoT business at MediaTek was the latest guest to feature on IoT Unplugged as he discussed the fragmented nature of the IoT market, how MediaTek subsequently prioritises its investments and development, and the growing adoption of AI.

Within the IoT business of MediaTek which was set up eight years ago to specifically address this market, the main source of revenue comes from its smart Edge platforms – taking approximately 40% – spanning everything from smart TVs to other smart home devices and voice assistants. By offering this wide-ranging market its effective tools and SDKs, MediaTek is creating a thriving ecosystem.

Providing some examples of where the company excels, Sharma mentioned its expertise in smartphones being power-efficient computing and in smart TVs and tablets, its display technology.

Where their customers may have unique needs, Sharma explained, such as wanting extended temperature support for ruggedised industries like Industrial 4.0 or smart cities, the company may design dedicated SoCs for these use cases, but otherwise it harnesses its existing portfolio of products, which also helps it in facing a fragmented market.

“But so far, we’ve had good success leveraging these strengths and existing products,” he said.

The integration of AI can be observed in the extensive use of AI-based tools by the company, such as deploying enterprise-grade versions of large language models (LLMs), and offering new products such as Genio 720 and Genio 520.

“These two products are pin compatible, so you can make one design and have two levels of performance on the same product, which our customers love, but more importantly, it has our eighth generation neural processing unit,” he said.

Partnerships with major players such as NVIDIA and Google are also helping the company in addressing this AI demand, Sharma explained, as the businesses’ respective expertise in AI offers developers “unbeatable” capabilities.

MediaTek is committed to the IoT market, Sharma said, aware that it takes patience, and investing in building a thriving ecosystem because that’s how it expects to have success.
