Uber to use Valid’s eSIM for IoT use cases

Uber is making plays to enhance its IoT deployments worldwide by adopting Valid’s mioSIM eSIM (embedded SIM) technology. The utilisation is set to see the ride-hailing giant more widely deploy their UberSIM technology solution.

The company will use Valid’s mioSIM eSIM, ConnectedYou’s connectivity platform and Valid’s Remote SIM Provisioning software to manage a multi-carrier connectivity across all mobile operators in the UberSIM ecosystem.

UberSIM is efforts by the ride-hailing company to improved connected experience and quality of service for all of Uber’s IoT deployments worldwide. This allows Uber to handle a single global UberSIM SKU which simplifies its operations across more than 70 countries.

Speaking on the announcement, Head of Global Direct Tech Deals at Uber Rahul Vijay said: “With access to millions of connected devices, we needed a one-stop-shop business model to deal with remote updates and streamline connectivity of the devices around the world in a simple way.”

Uber’s is currently set up to utilise data obtained via IoT, and implement it through things like pairing the right driver to passenger by taking information on things like location, payment approach and even driver performance. The company has even utilised things like smart watches that allows users to book rides, and even allow drivers to alert riders of their approach, all via the wearable.

COO of Valid Mobile Salvador Cabrera said: “Our expertise in providing eSIM interoperability gave us enough background to be able to set-up, test and provide the service in record time, while accommodating Uber specific requirements. Working with giants like Uber and with agile connectivity services providers like ConnectedYou perfectly illustrates Valid’s eSIM customer centric strategy which aims to support our customers to provide an improved digital journey during the eSIM implementation, building a bridge between the connectivity providers and the OEMs.”

One of the key sells of Valid’s eSIM is its compliance with the latest specifications of the GSMA, the industry organisation that sets standards for the mobile ecosystem. This interoperable system allows Uber to streamline its supply chain for connectivity access and, regardless of location of the IoT device, remotely manage or change connectivity subscriptions.

UberSim was announced in October 2022 through partnership with ConnectedYou following a point of saturation where the company stated a limit was reached in improving the quality of connectivity solutions and controlling how devices were connected based on the previous existing setup.
