BlackBerry reverse decision to separate IoT division

BlackBerry has reversed its decision to separate its IoT business from its cybersecurity, halting what would have included an IPO for the separate entity.

Coming off the back of the completion of their “Project Imperium”, the decision was made to lead to a renewed commitment to a joined up divisional structure, now choosing to operate as distinct internal divisions instead of separate entities.

This coincides with the appointment of a new CEO John J. Giamatteo, who has experience in cybersecurity from his tenure at McAfee and AVG Technologies. Under his leadership, BlackBerry aims to streamline operations and enhance profitability and cash flow for each division.

The change of course for BlackBerry reflects a broader strategic realignment, streamlining corporate functions into dedicated teams for each unit. The aim is for both divisions to operate independently, unlocking the company’s value and improve service delivery to customers.

BlackBerry’s journey to this point has been marked by significant transitions, from dominating the smartphone market to discontinuing phone production in early 2022. The company’s focus has increasingly shifted to expanding its offerings in IoT and cybersecurity. BlackBerry’s foray into IoT can be traced back to its acquisition of QNX in 2010 and its Project Ion development in 2014, which aimed at creating a secure IoT platform.

The company’s IoT ventures include BlackBerry Radar, an asset tracking and monitoring solution, and significant involvement in the automotive sector with clients like BMW, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo.

BlackBerry’s restructuring also saw announcements for cost-cutting measures. The company is in the final stages of selecting a consulting firm to aid in the separation and right-sizing process. This strategic realignment marks a moment BlackBerry make a play to regain its market presence.
