Advancing the capabilities of Artificial Intelligence

A Defence Centre for AI Research (DCAR) has been jointly formed by The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and the Alan Turing Institute.

Part of the newly released Defence AI Strategy and the recently established Defence AI Centre, the DCAR’s main purpose is to research problems related to advancing AI capability.

Examples include areas such as:

Turing will engage with universities to draw together the UK’s best experts. The Centre is expected to create five to eight new academic posts, starting from September 2022.

Glen Hart, Senior Principal Scientist from Dstl, commented: “The DCAR will be a centre of excellence which provides real focus to developing and applying AI ethically in defence contexts.”

The outcome of the research is expected to interest not only defence but the wider UK economy.
