Sensing solutions for the environment and fitness

Whether at home, in the office or outdoors, we all want the air around us to be clean and safe to breathe. To address this growing need, Bosch Sensortec has announced the BME AI-Studio Server software for the BME688: The “first” air quality MEMS sensor that combines gas, humidity, temperature and barometric pressure sensing with innovative artificial intelligence (AI) capability – essentially creating the world’s smallest four-in-one air quality measurement solution.

This single device enables customers to reduce their total cost of ownership, cut their development time and simplify design.

The sensor’s AI features and Bosch Sensortec’s new BME AI-Studio Server software tool make it straightforward for customers to rapidly develop custom solutions for their specific use cases. The gas sensor detects the presence of many gases, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) and other gas types such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen.

Thanks to its new BME AI-Studio Server software, it is now dynamically possible to collect data from all sensors in the field to continuously improve the algorithm – and therefore the customer’s use case.

This makes the Bosch sensor suitable for an infinite number of applications in the field of environmental sensing, such as the detection of spoiled food, bad breath, or the early detection of forest fires. The latter is achieved, for example, through a cooperation with Dryad Networks, where the BME688 sensors are used to detect forest fires before they spread with the help of an IoT network. Fewer fires mean significantly lower CO2 emissions and thus an active contribution by Bosch to climate protection.

BMP384 – resistant to water, chemicals and dust.

Wearables, home appliances and industrial applications are often used in harsh conditions. Until now, many barometric pressure sensors were not very robust or resistant to liquids and therefore could not be easily installed in waterproof products.

This is why Bosch Sensortec has developed the BMP384, a barometric pressure sensor that is as compact as it is rugged, and can detect changes in altitude even under harsh conditions. The sensor is very small in size and has an innovative package design utilising a special gel to protect it against ingressions. Therefore, it is ideally suited for fitness wearables in activities like swimming or in home appliances for water level detection in washing machines or clog detection in vacuum cleaners.

Bosch Sensortec is also presenting a new pressure sensor with outstanding accuracy for the first time at CES 2022. The sensor can be used for applications such as indoor navigation and localisation but especially for fitness tracking.

BHI260AP – revolutionises fitness tracking.

Squats, sit-ups, push-ups, or kettlebell training: the fitness exercises available today are almost endless. However, many fitness trackers or smartwatches can only track a limited number of activities and don’t always reliably recognise exercises based on users’ different movement styles, equipment, body sizes and performance levels.

To solve the problem, Bosch Sensortec has developed a new revolutionary self-learning motion sensor that adds artificial intelligence to wearables and hearables: the BHI260AP.

It automatically detects and responds to a wide variety of movements and pre-learned fitness activities, and is able to learn any new fitness activity based on regularly repeating sequences and cyclical patterns. Existing activities can always be personalised and adapted to the user’s own individual style.

The devices using BHI260AP sensors automatically track fitness activities and analyse the training intensity, which means that users can be trainers and trainees at the same time.
