Rohde & Schwarz empowers Qualcomm for emerging 5G and 6G frequency bands

As the 5G network landscape progresses, the utilisation of frequency ranges FR1 (0.41 to 7.125 GHz) and FR2 (24.25 to 71 GHz) remains crucial. With the advent of 5G-Advanced and 6G, discussions in global regulatory and industry forums are introducing a third frequency range, FR3, also termed upper-midband, which spans 7.125 to 24.25 GHz. This development is set to revolutionise mobile communication technology, with Rohde & Schwarz’s technology playing a pivotal role in demonstrating Qualcomm Technologies’ latest RF modem technology’s readiness for FR3.

The recent World Radio Conference 2023 in Dubai, organised by the International Telecommunication Union, saw a consensus among regulators and industry leaders to investigate additional spectrum bands for future mobile communications, dubbed IMT-2030 or 6G. Specifically, the 14.8 to 15.35 GHz band has been selected for global examination. Furthermore, entities such as the Federal Communications Commission in the USA are considering the upper 12 GHz band (12.7 to 13.25 GHz) for forthcoming wireless uses.

Rohde & Schwarz has facilitated Qualcomm Technologies in proving the Giga-MIMO system’s readiness for these new frequencies. This advancement promises improved data throughput and coverage equivalent to the existing 5G massive MIMO networks operating around 3.5 GHz.

To assess this prototype’s capabilities, Qualcomm Technologies employed the R&S SMW200A vector signal generator and R&S FSW signal and spectrum analyser from Rohde & Schwarz. This testing setup featured bespoke firmware to evaluate varied subcarrier spacings and broader signal bandwidths beyond current 3GPP physical layer norms, aiming to boost data speeds and reduce latency.

Andreas Pauly, Chief Technology Officer at Rohde & Schwarz, commented: “It’s exciting to collaborate with Qualcomm Technologies in venturing into the new era of mobile communications. Our specialised testing solutions are crucial in driving the progress of 5G-Advanced and 6G networks, with the exploration of FR3 frequency range laying the groundwork for future mobile applications.”

Tingfang Ji, Vice President of Engineering at Qualcomm Wireless Research, Qualcomm Technologies, stated: “Our commitment to leading the development of next-gen mobile technologies is steadfast, and we appreciate Rohde & Schwarz’s support in turning this vision into reality. Our work to activate Giga-MIMO in the upper midband for broad coverage is a precursor to 6G, heralding a significant advancement in wireless communications.”

At MWC Barcelona, Rohde & Schwarz will showcase an advanced signal generation and analysis setup for preliminary FR3 research. This includes the latest R&S SMW200A vector signal generator and R&S FSVA3000 signal analyser, featuring enhancements like a new user interface, improved EVM performance, and IQ noise cancellation for superior EVM measurement accuracy. This demonstration will highlight dedicated 5G signals for FR3.

Rohde & Schwarz invites attendees to discover its extensive range of mobile industry test solutions, including high-performance signal generation and analysis for FR3, at Mobile World Congress 2024. Visit Rohde & Schwarz at hall 5, booth 5A80, Fira Gran Via, Barcelona.
