Popular 1551 family of enclosures ideal for housing IoT sensors

Hammond Manufacturing have expanded their popular 1551 family of miniature plastic enclosures with the addition of an unventilated case option and three round versions.

The standard ventilated enclosures are designed to house sensors and small sub-systems installed in industrial environments. These enclosures have proven very popular due to one of their key features being the snap-fit closure that allows repeated opening and closing without tools and also maximises the internal space for PCBs by eliminating screw fixings to secure the cover to the base. The enclosures feature ventilation slots on all four vertical faces of the cover allowing sensors to detect the surrounding environment, the base of the cases feature wall mounting slots and a 15mm cable knock out in the base for extra convenience.

he 1551 family are offered in square and rectangular shapes and they have now introduced three round versions and the additional option of plain, unventilated covers throughout. In some applications, the entry of air and moisture into the enclosure is either not required or detrimental to the reliability of the electronics; the new plain cover versions offer increased protection against dust, dirt and moisture verses the vented enclosures, which are designed for housing environmental sensors.

The 1551 family is now available in 4 square and rectangular sizes of 80 x 80, 60 x 60, 40 x 40 and 80 x 40mm, all 20mm high and the new round versions are offered in 45, 60 and 80mm diameter, again all 20mm high. Due to the snap-fit closure mechanism this has allowed Hammond to remove the pillars from the inside of the enclosure which would usually be required for screw fixed types, this allows increased space for the PCB, in addition the enclosure bases are all fitted with 4mm PCB standoffs allowing users to secure the PCB in position via screws. The square and rectangular enclosures can accommodate maximum PCB sizes of 74 x 74, 54 x 54, 34 x 34 and 74 x 34mm respectively whilst the round enclosures can house maximum PCB sizes of 39, 54 and 73.50mm diameter respectively.

Enclosure base features

The enclosures are all constructed from robust ABS material flame retardant to UL94-HB and are offered in 3 colours throughout, black, grey and white.

Customisation

Hammond recognise that in-house or 3rd party enclosure modifications can be tedious, over-complicated, and a distraction from a customer’s core business. So they offer a factory modified enclosure service which gives customers access to an experienced enclosure modification team and two dedicated modification facilities located in North America and Europe. The Hammond factory modified enclosure service helps eliminate scrap and design errors with approval drawings to confirm correct interpretation of customers exact design requirements.

The service is offered with a low minimum order quantities and includes the following popular options:
